Putnam Rotary bestows grants to community

Several grants were awarded recently by Putnam Rotary as part of its community service recognition program.

Bill Fortune received a check for $300 to support home repairs for the needy in the Nitro area.

The grant will help pay for gasoline for the work van used by Carpenter's Helpers.

Melissa Ballard received a check for $250 to help her son Mason represent Putnam County in the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership national conference.

Mason Ballard is a sophomore at Poca High School.

Cathy Stark, executive director of the Tri-County Y received a check for $500 for the Leff Moore Scholarship Fund. The grant will help needy youth attend summer camp.

Joni Prince, president of Arts-in-Action, received an award of $500 to assist with scholarships for needy children in several arts camps this year.

The organization is sponsoring at present an Artistic Discovery Camp which teaches drama, singing, dancing and art.

Hurricane City Manager Ben Newhouse and Administrative Assistant Hannah Hage-Johnson received a contribution of $399, the out-of-pocket cost for a participant in the REACH work camp.

The local camp, sponsored by the city and several area churches, will host young people coming from around the country to make home repairs for needy families in Putnam County.
