John Adams Middle School student earns first Jason Legg ‘Go To’ award
  • Award named for Poca High School graduate
  • Everyone knows a "go to" person. He or she is the one who can always be depended upon, no matter what.

Jason Legg epitomized the go-to character, especially in his work with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Legg, a Poca High School graduate, died Nov. 21 from injuries he received in a car accident.

His memory lives on, though, through the FCA's new Jason G. Legg "Go To" Award. The first recipient is a young man who emulates Legg's go-to character and dedication - Max Shavers, an eighth-grader at John Adams Middle School.

Max received the Go To award during the FCA's Hoops Classic Dec. 17 at the Charleston Civic Center. The Legg family presented the award to him at half time.

"Max exemplifies that same character. He's always spoken at our meetings, and he's a leader and involved in community service," said FCA State Director Keith Tyler.

In an e-mail, Max said he is honored to earn the first Jason G. Legg "Go To" Award.

"It feels really good to be the first to get the award. I feel honored because someone thought enough of me to give me this award. I think Mr. Legg was someone I would admire if I would have known him. His family lost a lot, but they are making sure his memory lives on," Max said.

Max maintains a 4.0 grade point average at John Adams and is involved in sports, including basketball and football. Standing nearly 6 feet tall and growing, Max is a natural for basketball, but football is closer to his heart.

"I like football more because I've always loved the sport. I used to watch my cousin, T.R. Dues play when I was a baby, and I guess it stuck with me. People always think I should play basketball because of my height, but my heart is with football. I guess I'll go where God takes me," he said.

The Go To award recognizes FCA students who exhibit exemplary leadership, dedication and commitment to the program.

Max helps to lead the FCA program at John Adams.

FCA "has helped me to be a better person. My faith is important to me because it keeps me focused on trying to do the right thing. At school, I teach other kids about trusting God through our FCA activities," Max said.

Max is active in his church, Grace Bible Church, which is at 600 Kanawha Blvd. W. in Charleston. He organizes service projects through the church to benefit the West Side community.

"We did a canned food drive so families could have a good Thanksgiving dinner, and we have also done clothing donations so kids would have nice outfits for Easter. I have also helped deliver food to a local shelter. I do these things with other kids in the church."

Tyler said the Go To award is a fitting way to honor Legg's memory. According to his obituary, Legg was the FCA Athlete of the Year during his senior year at Poca High School.

Tyler said Legg was a faithful member of the FCA and "was involved in community services and camps. When I first came on staff, I was just learning and he was a guy that I always called. He was always there. Anytime we needed something, we could always count on him," Tyler said.
