As a possible pre-emptive strike to the cavalcade of calories that can easily entice you into overindulgence at the Thanksgiving Day dinner table, the Tri-County YMCA in Scott Depot will host a vigorous workout on the morning of Thanksgiving.
The workout will take place from 8:30 to 10 a.m. in the Tri-County YMCA's main facility.
Participation involves a $5 fee or a donation of two cans of non-perishable food items for distribution by the Community Cupboard.
Marty Bavetz, physical and wellness director at the Tri-County YMCA, said, "Typically, what we do is open our facility to the community from 8 to 10 a.m. Thanksgiving morning. In our gymnasium, we host a giant group fitness class, so there's some combination of boot camp, Pilates, a little yoga - basically a little bit of everything is done in that class."
Tri-County YMCA Group Fitness Coordinator Mary Smith will lead aerobics classes on Thanksgiving morning, joined by other staff members.
Concurrently, Baretz said, the Tri-County YMCA's fitness center is open for community members to use. He said the fitness center includes a variety of exercise equipment, including spin bikes, ellipticals, weight-circuit tools and free-weight areas.
"We've done this for many years. I've been here for seven and a half years, and we've done it every year since I've been here. They had done it for many years, too, before I've done it.
"We encourage people to get some calories burned before we all enjoy a nice Thanksgiving dinner, with the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie and all of the calories that come along with the dinner," said Bavetz.
The Tri-County YMCA is located at 200 Carls Lane in Scott Depot.
